My Donna Summer Top 5

Another icon is gone. Donna Summer died earlier this morning after a battle with cancer. She was 63. Summer’s death follows the passing of gay icon Whitney Houston earlier this year. Though the two women were from different eras musically, both were goddesses within the gay community. Summer’s disco jams were hugely influential on singer’s from the 1980s and 90s. You could lose count trying to tally up all the hits in Donna Summer’s catelog, but here’s my Top 5. #1 – “MacArthur Park” Nevermind that the lyrics are so silly, this song is simply infectious on every single level. And I will never leave my cake out in the rain! #2 “This Time I Know It’s For Real” I never get tired of hearing this song. It’s one of the few songs on my iPhone that I listen to almost daily. It is impossible to feel anything but shear joy while listening to Donna’s incredible range here. #3 – “No More Tears (Enough is Enough)” Donna Summer was featured on Barbra Streisand’s hit “No More Tears.” Donna and Barbra. WHAT. MORE. COULD. YOU. WANT. This duet is proof there is a God somewhere. #4 – “The Last Dance” Many [...]

Home testing for HIV is positively crazy

This week, an advisory panel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave its approval to a rapid, at-home HIV antibody test. If approved by the full FDA, as expected, people will be able to purchase the test over-the-counter, and screen themselves at home for HIV. Most of the public response to this news has been excited approval, but as someone who has worked in the HIV/AIDS field for 12 years, I think an over-the-counter HIV test is a horrible idea. In July 2010, President Barack Obama unveiled the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS), which puts a greater emphasis on HIV screening and referral to treatment. (Actually, I believe the emphasis on HIV screening is too great. I wrote an op-ed in The Washington Blade detailing how routine HIV testing is a flawed strategy for preventing new infections.) Since the NHAS was released, HIV professionals have been slowly shifting from a focus on prevention among HIV-negative populations, to a strategy of identifying new HIV infections and getting those people into care. In other words, interventions that focus on changing risky behavior are being downplayed in favor of a strategy of strictly finding HIV infections and getting people who were unaware of their status into treatment [...]

Obama pressed on DOMA repeal at ‘The View’

Appearing on “The View,” this morning, President Barack Obama talked about his decision to endorse same-sex marriage. Barbara Walters pressed the president on whether he would attempt to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Watch: The repeal of DOMA will be the next theater in the battle for full equality. Marriage has always been a states issue, meaning that every state is free, more or less, to define marriage as it sees fits. The question becomes do state consitutions allow for individual states to deny marriage licenses to gay couples. In California, the court has said the answer is no. DOMA is the federal government’s infrigement into the marriage arena — in effect, weighing in on an area that had previously been left to states. The federal constitutional question is this: Why is it OK for a state to recognize heterosexual marriages from other states, but not homosexual ones? On this basis, it would appear that DOMA is a direct violation of the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause. And the Obama administration agrees, which is why it won’t defend DOMA anymore. But the president can (and should) continue to put political pressure on Congress to repeal DOMA. Kudos to [...]
