From the NYT piece:

“They are absolutely not against the gays,” said one close friend, JoAnne Hood, who also attends Eagle Brook. “They are just not for marriage.”

Ummm.... So, they're not "against the gays", they just don't want them to have the same civil rights as everyone else in this country. Makes perfect sense! I'm so glad that was clarified!

By the way, I agree with you - she's far too absurd a caricature to have any real shot in the race. The hoopla now is just about her controversy, not her legitimacy.

The Marines are in full support of the repeal. Your neighbor at 8th and I agrees and states the following:

General James Amos, 35th Commandant of the Marine Corps
Statement on the repeal of Title 10, US Code 654 "Policy Concerning Homosexuality in the United States Armed Forces" (Don’t Ask Don’t Tell):
19 December 2010
"Fidelity is the essence of the United States Marine Corps. Above all else, we are loyal to the Constitution, our Commander in Chief, Congress, our chain of command, and the American people. The House of Representatives and the Senate have voted to repeal Title 10, US Code 654 "Policy Concerning Homosexuality in the United States Armed Forces." As stated during my testimony before Congress in September and again during hearings before the Senate Armed Services Committee earlier this month, the Marine Corps will step out smartly to faithfully implement this new policy. I, and the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, will personally lead this effort, thus ensuring the respect and dignity due all Marines. On this matter, we look forward to further demonstrating to the American people the discipline and loyalty that have been the hallmark of the United States Marine Corps for over 235 years."

Here's what I don't get. People who don't support gay marriage often use the piss-poor excuse that it somehow demeans or threatens the institution of marriage, blah blah blah. Yet Sen. David Vitter, who was caught not only CHEATING ON HIS WIFE but also BREAKING THE LAW by hiring prostitutes is allowed to continue serving in Congress without so much as a blink from Republicans. Hello, hypocrisy. You can tolerate a man engaging in that sort of behavior - but hey, it's ok, cause he's married to a woman. But two guys? Two girls? OH HEAVEN'S NO!
It offends me so deeply that they talk of amending the Constitution to do nothing but sully it with words of discrimination, hatred and inequality. But then again, why would I expect anything more from these people who prefer trading in fear-mongering and bigotry instead of acceptance and tolerance.
