Pro-life Harold Ford threathening to challenge Sen. Gillibrand in NY
For reasons known only to him, former Democratic Congressman Harold Ford Jr. is considering a primary challenge to sitting Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.). Ford is hiring staffers even though Majority Leader Harry Reid is encouraging people to stay away from him.
Ford lost a U.S. Senate race in 2006 in Tennessee, while Gillibrand replaced Hillary Clinton when she was confirmed as secretary of state. Sen. Gillibrand had been representing upstate New York in the U.S. House of Representatives when she was appointed by Gov. David Paterson.
By all appearances Gillibrand has done a great job as a senator, but her average poll numbers have given potential opponents thoughts about challenging her. She has been excellent on our issues; she has been leading to charge to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in the Senate.
By his own admission, Ford is a “moderate” Democrat, but truthfully speaking, he is quite conservative. There is little doubt that gay New Yorkers are better off being represented by Gillibrand than they would be by Ford. Women might be better off with Gillibrand too.
