President Obama signs historic hate crimes bill

Fulfilling a campaign promise and ending a decade of advocacy, President Barack Obama has signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Hates Crimes Act into law. The historic moment took place earlier this afternoon at the White House.

This historic event marks the first substantive change that the president has delivered. And he deserves much credit. A great deal of credit also goes to the late Ted Kennedy. No one made this day more possible than the liberal lion.

Kudos also the Senator Harry Reid. Though I’m not a fan of Sen. Reid, it was his idea to attach the bill to the Defense Reauthorization Bill and it worked! Well done, Sen. Reid.
